Explore, Create and be Inspired
Our photographers will guide you on this amazing photography tour in sunny Portugal. Our tour includes wonderful photo opportunities in Sintra, (the most romantic town in Portugal,) the seacoast and villages of the area, historical sites and palaces, and Lisbon, (the vibrant capital of Portugal bursting with culture.)
Day 1, Arrival (D)
Prepare to be inspired, to laugh, to challenge yourself, and to make incredible photographs.
We’ll welcome you with wine and cheese late in the afternoon. We’ll chat about some of the places we’ll see and adventures we have planned. Jose speaks excellent English and is very experienced at teaching photography to all levels. With years of exploring in the coastal and hilly areas around Sintra, Jose and Fernando have a knack for finding special places for photo ops that tourists have not discovered.
If the group is up for it after long journeys, we’ll drive out to praia das Maçãs, to get a feel for the place and see a little of the scenery that will unfold before your eyes as the days progress.
Tonight we’ll enjoy a light dinner in a traditional Portuguese restaurant. (included)
Day 2, Atlantic Realms, Belvederes and Faith Places (B)
A delicious breakfast will be ready for you in the hotel dining room.
We’ll pick you up at 9:00 am for a full day called Atlantic Realms, Belvederes, and Faith Places. We drive to Praia Grande with a wide expanse of golden sand and waves that attract surfers from near and far. We’ll drive to Praia das Macas, (also known as Apple Beach,) to take photos of the crashing waves and fishermen on the cliffs. From there we will go around Praia das Macas so that we have two different views of this very popular beach. We will visit Azenhas do Mar, (a bright, white-washed village with red tiled roofs perched high on a cliff.) On our way to Magoito Beach, we will drive through the countryside with crop fields, farms and villages.
Lunch will be either in a local café or something we pick up to go. (not included) As photographers, we don’t want to miss the best light so our coffee breaks and lunches will be at different times every day.
We will arrive back at the hotel mid to late afternoon so you can upload pictures or take a rest before getting ready for your evening dinner at a local restaurant. (not included)
Day 3, History and Tradition (B)
Rise and Shine! We’ve planned a very interesting History and Tradition day. We will go to the fishing port or Ericeira and make an early stop at Lizandro beach where a large river flows into the sea. We’ll take country roads and stop to take pictures of windmills and rolling hills.
Lunch will be in a traditional Portuguese restaurant where you may want to try the catch of the day. (not included)
In the afternoon, we’ll drive to Mafra and tour the enchanting palace and cathedral, (one of the largest in Europe.) The golden afternoon light will be perfect for making photos of this magnificent limestone palace and monastery.
We’ll arrive back at the hotel so that you can upload your pictures and share some with the group. Our discussions will help you think about ways to strengthen your photography in the coming days.
Prepare to be entertained at dinner. We will be driving to a tiny Adega in the village of Penedo. Along with the villagers, we will enjoy the laments of a Fado singer and guitarist while we share assorted Portuguese style tapas. They have delicious sangria you may want to try. (not included)
Day 4, Sintra, the Romantic Village (B)
We call this Sintra, the Romantic Village day and you will know why as soon as you set eyes on it. You will have already discovered cobbled streets, facades covered with colourful tiles, and views of Pena Palace off and the Moorish castle off in the distance. We will photograph the exterior and terrace of Sintra National Palace with two tall conical chimneys and architecture that looks like it was created for a fairy tale. We’ll drive up the winding mountain roads to tour the romantic Pena National Palace. In the mid 19th Century it was built on the site of a 16th Century monastery. Here you will have fantastic views of the valleys and Sintra below. The Palace has several terraces where you can take your time to photograph the amazing variety of architectural styles. Inside you’ll enjoy taking pictures of tiles, ornate ballustrades, chandeliers, ballrooms, and much more.
Lunch will be on the main terrace of the palace. (not included)
The palatial Monserrate Palace and gardens will be our next stop. Monserrate was the house where famous British artist and poet, William Beckford, lived. With its peach coloured exterior and finely detailed interior features, it is one of the most iconic places of Sintra. Like the other palaces in the region, such as the Pena Palace, this is an example of Portuguese Romanticism. The design of the gardens took advantage of the unique microclimates of the mountains to produce a magnificent park where over 3,000 exotic species can still be seen today. You’ll photograph idyllic views of trees from all over the world, waterfalls and ponds.
We’ll return to the hotel in time for you to upload your images and rest before dinner at a local restaurant. (not included.)
Day 5, From Riches to Rags (B, L)
This day is called From Riches to Rags as we’ll photograph the opulence of Queluz Palace and the humble dwellings that monks carved out of stone high in the forest of Sintra. We will start the day by driving to Palacio de Queluz, often referred to as the Portuguese Versailles. We’ll have photo ops around every corner as we tour the exquisite 18th Century Rococo palace and sculpted gardens.
Our lunch will be in a traditional café where the locals eat so that you can sample the real flavours of Portugal. (included)
In the afternoon, we will delve into the woods in Sintra’s mountain range. We will see huge boulders scattered on the hillside and wind our way up narrow roads to Convento dos Capuchos. In the 16th Century monks lived a spartan life there. They carved the monastery in the rock and lined the walls with cork from the trees growing in the area. We will help you get some of the best shots of the worn tiles, living quarters, and remaining altars and religious artifacts.
We’ll arrive back at the hotel with time for some photo editing, a rest, or to take a walk to the nearby shops that sell treasures created by local artisans.
Dinner in a local restaurant. (not included)
Day 6, Sights and Sounds of Lisbon (B, L)
Get ready for a big day in the city! We’ll drive to Lisbon where and stroll narrow, cobbled streets and visit historical and avant garde neighborhoods such as Baixa, (downtown,) and Bairro Alto.
Lunch will be in a restaurant where the locals eat. (included.)
We’ll drive along twisty streets and climb stairs to get the best views of the city and the Tagus River. We’ll hear the clang of the bright yellow #28 Tram and capture images as it threads it’s way through the busy streets. Mimes and street musicians will entertain us and be prepared to drop them a coin if you take their picture.
At the end our day in Lisbon, we’ll stop for a world famous pastry, Pasteis de Belem, (made from a secret recipe since 1837.) Driving back to Sintra along the coast road you’ll feast your eyes on stunning seascapes.
Tonight you’ll enjoy a quiet evening preparing for our last busy day of photography in some of our favourite locations in the area.
Day 7, Rural Portugal (B, D)
Our Rural Portugal day will include special places that we’ve saved for last. Today is a wonderful opportunity to practice everything you’ve learned during our time together. We’ll travel through country roads and stop to take pictures of spring flowers and windmills along the way.
We’ll go to the Archaeological Museum at Odrinhas where we can photograph ancient Roman artifacts that have been collected over the years in the local area.
After lunch, (not included,) we’ll go on to photograph in the beautifully restored village of Aldeia da Mata Pequena. It’s a charming traditional “Saloia” village with white-washed stone houses. It’s been lovingly brought back to life through the tireless work of Diogo Batalha and provides a tranquil setting for those who want to spend time out in the country.
You will end the day feeling enchanted with all that you’ve seen, learned, and experienced.
Dinner will be in a traditional local restaurant. (included)
It will be difficult for you to leave this charming country but if you are like Marion, you will return again and again.
